#72 | The Health Shift That Unlocked My Business Growth w/ Dr. Bart

By Levi McClendon

This episode of the Cheers to Freedom Podcast is a little different. We’re not talking about marketing tactics or membership numbers today. We’re talking about the thing that makes all of it possible: your health.

Levi sits down with Dr. Bart to have an honest conversation about the health shift that changed everything — not just personally, but in business too.

The Wake-Up Call

Like a lot of entrepreneurs, Levi spent years grinding. Long hours, fast food, inconsistent sleep, and the constant stress of building a business. The results showed up in his work, sure — but they also showed up in how he felt every day.

Low energy. Brain fog. That 2 PM crash that made afternoons feel like a slog. Sound familiar?

It wasn’t until he started working with a functional health practitioner that things began to change.

What “Functional Health” Actually Means

Dr. Bart breaks it down simply: traditional medicine waits until something is broken and then tries to fix it. Functional health asks, “How do we optimize the systems in your body so nothing breaks in the first place?”

For entrepreneurs, this is a critical distinction. You don’t need to be “sick” to be operating at 60% of your potential. And when you’re running a business, that missing 40% is costing you — in decisions, energy, creativity, and leadership.

The Changes That Mattered Most

Levi shares the specific shifts that had the biggest impact:

Sleep — Not just more sleep, but better sleep. Cutting screens before bed, keeping the room cold, and establishing a consistent schedule made mornings completely different.

Nutrition — Moving away from processed convenience food to whole foods. Not a fad diet — just real food, consistently. The energy shift was noticeable within weeks.

Movement — Not crushing it at the gym for two hours. Walking, stretching, and consistent moderate exercise. The goal is sustainability, not intensity.

Stress management — Learning to identify when stress was productive (driving action) versus destructive (causing anxiety and poor decisions). Breathwork and time outdoors became non-negotiables.

The Business Impact

Here’s what surprised Levi the most: the business improvements came without changing anything about the business itself.

  • Better decisions — Clearer thinking meant fewer reactive, emotional calls and more strategic moves.
  • More patience — With his team, with customers, with the ups and downs of running a company.
  • Sustained energy — No more afternoon crashes meant the second half of the day was just as productive as the first.
  • Creative thinking — New ideas and solutions started flowing more naturally.

The Lesson for Operators

If you’re a car wash owner or operator reading this, here’s the takeaway: you are the most important asset in your business. Your equipment can be serviced. Your team can be trained. Your marketing can be optimized. But if you’re running on empty, everything else suffers.

You don’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul overnight. Start with one thing. Fix your sleep. Clean up your nutrition. Move your body every day. See how it feels after 30 days.

The ROI on investing in yourself isn’t just personal — it shows up in your P&L.
